James Cockrum, a resident of Oakland City, was born in 1799 and purchased land in Gibson County in 1818. Cockrum and his son, William Monroe Cockrum, used their barn to aid enslaved Blacks seeking freedom along the Underground Railroad. His home, located on the Oakland City University campus, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, with restoration completed in 2002. When Oakland City University students go to see Dr. Randy Mills in his office in the restored Cockrum Hall building, they may chance to meet a ghost, or so local lore would have it. Dr. Mills, who teaches survey and advanced history courses, noted... “In fact, working in a building with so much history often inspires me.”
